Crosshair Settings Pros Actually Use in CS2

The reality is more complicated, and copying settings without understanding them is one of the most common ways players accidentally make themselves worse.

What the Data Actually Shows

HLTV and community tracking sites have catalogued crosshair settings for professional players across multiple seasons of CS2 play. The patterns that emerge are clear. The vast majority of professionals use small, static crosshairs with no dynamic movement. Dynamic crosshairs, which expand when you move or fire, are overwhelmingly rejected at the top level. The reasoning is straightforward: if your crosshair expands when you spray, it is giving you false information about where your bullets are going. Pros prefer a crosshair that stays fixed and honest.

In terms of colour, green and cyan dominate, with white appearing occasionally. Red is rarely used at the professional level, though some players swear by it on darker maps. Yellow appears almost never. The reasoning comes down to contrast. A green or cyan crosshair is visible against most surfaces in CS2 without blending into player models or common wall textures. Bright red can disappear against certain CT-side areas on Inferno or against explosion effects.

Thickness tends to sit between 0 and 1 in CS2 units, with most professionals using values of 0.5 to 1. Gap settings cluster around negative values, meaning the crosshair lines overlap at the centre. A gap of negative 3 to negative 1 is typical. This creates a small dot in the centre of the crosshair, which helps with precise aiming without adding visual clutter. ZywOo, widely considered one of the best aimers in the world, has historically used a crosshair with very fine lines and a small negative gap. Device, during his peak years with Astralis, used a slightly thicker crosshair than average but kept the overall size minimal.

Static vs Dynamic: Why Pros Reject Dynamic Crosshairs

When CS2 launched, Valve introduced a new crosshair system with more customisation options than CS:GO. Dynamic crosshairs returned as an option, and they attracted attention from players who had come from games like Valorant where spread indicators are standard. For CS2 specifically, dynamic crosshairs create a problem that goes beyond aesthetics.

Counter-Strike's movement accuracy penalty is sharp. When you move and fire, your bullets go almost nowhere near the crosshair. A dynamic crosshair that expands to show this spread is not actually helping you aim, because no serious CS2 player should be firing while running. The crosshair expansion just adds visual noise to moments where you should already know not to shoot. Static crosshairs force you to learn proper counter-strafing and stop-and-fire discipline because there is no visual crutch telling you your crosshair is in the wrong place. You have to internalise that yourself.

The one argument for dynamic crosshairs is that beginners might benefit from the visual feedback. But that feedback only helps if you are watching your crosshair while spraying, which is itself a habit that limits your ability to track enemies. Better to learn the correct movement habits early and use a static crosshair from the start.

Outline and Size: The Details That Matter More Than You Think

Crosshair outline adds a thin border around the crosshair lines, improving visibility against light backgrounds. Many professionals use a small outline value, typically 0.5 to 1, to ensure the crosshair is visible against snow on maps like Overpass or bright concrete on Mirage's B apartments. Without an outline, a white or light-coloured crosshair disappears against pale surfaces at the worst possible moment.

Size is where players get most confused. Larger crosshairs feel easier to see, and some players assume that must make them easier to aim with. In practice, a crosshair that is too large obscures enemy heads at distance. On a long-range duel at Dust2's Long, a crosshair with a length of 5 or above covers a significant portion of the enemy's upper body, making precise headshots harder to line up. Most professionals use a length of 1 to 3.5. Shorter lines mean less obstruction and more precise visual information about exactly where the centre of the crosshair sits.

The dot-only crosshair, essentially a crosshair with lines removed and only the centre dot visible, is used by a small number of players. NiKo experimented with variations close to this style during certain periods. The advantage is minimal visual clutter; the disadvantage is that a single dot gives less directional reference, making micro-adjustments during spray transfers harder to execute consistently.

Stop Copying Crosshairs Without Understanding Them

Here is the honest pushback on the "copy the pros" approach. A professional player's crosshair has been refined over thousands of hours of play at resolutions, aspect ratios, and sensitivities you may not share. s1mple has historically played at 400 DPI with a sensitivity of 3.09, which is considerably higher than many players use. At his sensitivity, a crosshair that feels precise makes different demands than the same crosshair would at 800 DPI and 1.2 sensitivity. The crosshair does not exist in isolation from the rest of the setup.

More importantly, copying a crosshair does not transfer the muscle memory or the decision-making that makes a professional player effective. Players sometimes spend hours finding the perfect crosshair configuration and then queue into matches without any meaningful improvement. The crosshair is genuinely one of the smaller variables in CS2 performance. Mouse control, positioning, game sense, and utility usage matter far more. A slightly suboptimal crosshair held by a player with good fundamentals beats the perfect crosshair held by someone with poor counter-strafing every time.

The productive approach is to understand what properties matter, pick a setting that fits your resolution and playstyle, and then leave it alone. Constant crosshair adjustments are a distraction. Pick a small static crosshair in a high-contrast colour, disable dynamic behaviour, set a small outline value, and commit to it for a month. If you are still struggling with aim after that, the crosshair is almost certainly not the problem. Structured aim training will do far more for your performance than another hour spent in the crosshair editor.

The players who obsess over crosshair settings are often the same players who avoid the harder work of reviewing their own positioning mistakes or learning proper smoke lineups. A crosshair takes five minutes to configure. Fixing the habits that cost you rounds takes weeks. Prioritise accordingly.
